The Research Centre was established to research into the materials used by designers, art practitioners, printers, and conservators. It later developed a broad focus on science as it relates to art, design, fashion and communication.
Within the Centre, individuals have researched materials, conservation, colour imaging and document security.
In July 2010, MATAR as a research unit, was closed. However, research into Material Arts at UAL continues, and fantastic facilities are available.
